Background Notes
Between 1983 and 1987, SMU had eight players taken in the first 54 picks of the draft. At 71, LeRibeus is the highest draft pick SMU has produced in 25 years. Guess the death penalty worked.
Debbie LeRibeus, JL’s mom, seems to be the one talking every time Josh is doing press, from high school recruiting through a HogsHaven podcast this past month. He seems like a gregarious guy, but he so far has demonstrated a somewhat endearing -but potentially incautious- lack of a certain je ne sais quoi with the press.
SMU is 15 miles away from JL’s high school. LeRibeus has really never left Dallas., so moving to Washington will be a change from his comfort zone. Presumably Mrs. LeRibeus will be following Josh to Washington, so hopefully that’s enough to keep things stable for him.

LeRibeus was key in Berkner’s 12-0 season in 2006 after moving from guard to tackle to tight end throughout the season.
“Josh was a dominating player from his junior high years all the way through all his high school years,” [Jim] Ledford said.

Redshirted freshman year. Started all games his sophomore year and was honorable mention all-conference. Sat out junior year for academic eligibility issues. Returned senior year to start all games and makes All-Conference team,

Nawrocki liked him a lot more than Bunting did. Bunting killed him.
His high school coach at Berkener Richardson, Jim Ledford, sees LeRibeus as a scheme fit for the Redskins. However, he’s only zone blocked for one game in his career, and it was an All-Star game. All analysts saw him as a good scheme blocker, and Mayock thought he’d transition well to a zone-blocking scheme. Everyone saw him as having the correct nasty disposition for the interior.
Weight Issues
Dominated his draft profile. LeRibeus listed at anywhere from 315 to 340 in high school but carried his weight well in high school. He was athletic enough to fill in at tight end as well as all other line positions., but big enough to be referred to as ‘massive’ in multiple scouting reports. He was 350 to 360 pounds by the end of his sophomore year. He was still very agile for his size -apparently wowing teammates with his agility on the racquetball court- but not playing his junior year led to further weight gain By the end of the 2010 football season, LeRibeus was up to 380 pounds. At this point LeRibeus was at a crossroads, much like Elder Cunningham in the Book of Mormon. To wit:

Up is about!
Faced with losing a pro career that had seemed pre-destined for him since junior high, LeRibeus manned the F up, found the weight room, ate the chicken and rice, and shed 70 pounds in 6 months. He changed his offseason workout regimen and started going to the weight room every day as opposed to just twice a week. He cut out fast food and started eating healthy. He began finishing first in conditioning drills amongst the other linemen, impressing teammates.
